JustMusic: Closed from 18 March 2024
Despite various countermeasures and reorganisations, JustMusic had not been operating profitably for some time. Our core business increasingly shifted to a few online giants with far more favourable cost structures. This created price pressure that we, as a large city retailer with a full range of products and the associated personnel and operating costs, were no longer able to compete with. Unlike the online giants, we were unable to compensate for the constantly falling margins with mass sales.
The acute shortage of specialist staff had also long been evident in local music retailers, making it difficult to effectively exploit the fundamental advantages over online competitors. We were unable to influence this and other factors, including the shop closures and restrictions imposed due to the pandemic, inflation, the sharp rise in operating costs, and the low demand for luxury musical instruments in economically uncertain times.
After many years of rebuilding, internal restructuring during and after the pandemic with the associated closures of the branches in Hamburg, Munich and Dortmund, as well as the Piano Galerie in Wilmersdorf, we saw no further opportunity to reverse the negative trend.
JustMusic was not just another department stores' saying goodbye to the capital, but also a meeting place for musicians and music enthusiasts, a piece of tradition and culture. The management and all JustMusicians have done everything in their power over the past few years to ensure its continued existence. We deeply regret that we have not succeeded in doing so.
We would like to thank all our customers and friends for their loyalty and interest. We would also like to thank all current and former colleagues for their commitment and loyalty over the decades.
